While our experience this year was unique, with record breaking snow fall, the beauty of Ireland is all around whether snow is on the ground or not. Where We Went: Guided Group Tours to Ireland & Best Winter Destinations
Our 10 Day, All Inclusive Adventure with Alley started in Cork, with magical stays, enchanting castles, and the experience to explore like a local. Before diving into the details, here’s a quick list of all the places we visited:
- Dublin – A lively, festive city with holiday markets and rich history
- Cork – A vibrant city where we rang in the New Year
- Blarney Castle – A legendary stop just outside of Cork
- Kilkenny – A charming medieval town
- Springfield Castle – A unique stay in a historic setting
- Rock of Dunamase – A stunning castle ruin with panoramic views
- Killarney – A picturesque town with incredible nature and history
Unfortunately, due to the December weather, we were unable to visit the Cliffs of Moher or Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. It’s important to be aware that winter travel in Ireland can sometimes mean adapting to unpredictable conditions.
Killarney: A Winter Wonderland
Killarney National Park turns into a breathtaking winter landscape. Alley took in the scenic beauty of Torc Waterfall and Ross Castle, embracing the tranquil side of Ireland away from the summer crowds. Opting for All Inclusive Trips to Ireland ensures that travelers can explore such destinations effortlessly.
Doing Dublin During December
Dublin in December is alive with festive spirit. Twinkling lights line the streets, and local markets bring warmth to the city’s cool winter air. Alley and her crew explored historical landmarks like Trinity College and Dublin Castle before cozying up in traditional pubs for live music and hearty Irish fare. As part of Guided Group Tours to Ireland, experiencing Dublin’s festive charm becomes even more immersive.
Springfield Castle & A Snow Day to Remember
Alley and the group had the once-in-a-lifetime experience staying in Springfield castle for a portion of their trip. The iconic experience was a highlight of their tour in Ireland, offering guests the chance to dine and explore without rushing around crowds.
Rock of Cashel, Offering Iconic Views & Fewer Crowds
The Rock of Cashel offered dramatic views for Alley and her guests as they took in all that Ireland had to offer in December. The slight snow made everything feel more magical, offering the group a unique experience from peak travel season.
Food and Fun From a Local Perspective
A notable stop for Alley and her guests was The Marina Market. This market spot made the perfect indoor adventure. This local gem in Cork was an ideal place to enjoy a drink, a bite, and get a sense of what life is like as a local in Ireland. What’s Open, What’s Not? Guided Group Tours to Ireland
Finding fun for guided group tours to Ireland isn’t as hard as it may seem. When planning with Atomic Trips, we make sure all of our hosts, and their guests have a seamless experience from start to farewell dinner. As trip guides, our specialty is in finding things to do and places to go, while allowing you the freedom to roam. While some of the group stuck around, others rented cars and explored across the Emerald Isle.
While our trip experienced a record-breaking winter storm that briefly halted travel, such occurrences are not the norm. Typically, Ireland remains accessible and full of charm even in the winter months.
Weather in December
Expect cool temperatures (around 40°F/5°C), occasional rain, and shorter daylight hours. But the cozy ambiance of fireside pubs and warm drinks makes up for the chill. We personally experienced a snow adventure and it turned into one of the most memorable days of the trip! While it isnt the norm, it made it a memorable experience for our guided group tour to Ireland.
What’s Open?
Many attractions remain open, including holiday markets, cultural sites, and restaurants. Christmas festivals and local celebrations add a festive touch to the experience.
Despite closures, we found incredible alternatives, such as private guided experiences, historic pub visits, and winter-themed events.
What’s Closed?
While some outdoor activities like boat tours might be paused, Alley found alternative experiences, such as exploring indoor cultural gems and hidden local spots. Winter is also a time to slow down for locals, with many taking months off to enjoy the quiet of winter. While that may make it harder to find big box things to do, it allowed our group to find more local experiences and space to explore.
